An Italian super sports car with blistering performance and open-air thrills
Two years after the debut of its latest super sports car, Maserati has revealed the roadster version of the mid-engine MC20, the MC20 Cielo. The drop-top sibling of the Italian brand’s current flagship coupe is also developed and will be manufactured in Modena, along with its MC20 coupe.
"Cielo" means "sky" in Italian, highlighting the dedication of this supercar to the ultimate driving experience in the great outdoors. It takes only 12 seconds to retract and store the hardtop under the solid rear deck lid, where the electrochromic roof flips from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on the central screen, thanks to the Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology.
At the heart of the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo still lies the same twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V6 Nettuno engine that pushes out 630 hp and 730 Nm of torque, as found in its coupe sibling. Linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential, the six-cylinder mill enables the new drop-top supercar to go from zero to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds before hitting a top speed of over 320 km/h.
Designed by Centro Stile Maserati in Turin, Italy, the open-topped Cielo shares many design traits with its coupe sibling, including the wide oval grille that houses the latest version of the trident badge, the vertical LED headlights, and the sizeable cooling vents on the hood. However, the Cielo sets itself apart from the coupe variant with the optional giant Trident logo on the Tonneau cover, and the new three-layer metallic color known as Acquamarina—available as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customization program. Inspired by racing, an iridescent aquamarine mica enlivens the new exterior color and makes it unique.
The new Spyder variant has a curb weight of 1,540 kg, meaning it weighs just 65 kg more than the coupe. Step inside the cabin of the 2023 MC Cielo, and it greets you with soft, high-quality materials, including a sporty Alcantara steering wheel and leather buckets seats—both can be swapped for carbon fiber versions. On the technology front, there is a 10-inch all-digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment system. An optional 12-speaker High Premium Sonus Faber audio system is also available.
The new Cielo also features a wide range of driver-assistance systems (Active Safety Systems), including a new 360-degree camera, an autonomous emergency brake, blind-spot monitoring system, and traffic sign information system, along with the parking sensors and rear-view camera.
