In celebration of National Panda Day on 16th March, Fabergé introduces a captivating locket featuring this precious bear. This special creation joins Fabergé’s Heritage collection, which celebrates Fabergé’s love of surprise and wit, and showcases complex traditional techniques, such as the delicate art of guilloché enamelling and hand-engraving.
This delightful panda surprise is crafted from 18k yellow gold coated in black and white lacquer, and features sparkling black diamond eyes and little golden paw prints. Sitting on a green chrysoprase stone base and holding a piece of gold bamboo, this special bear is encased in an 18k yellow gold egg-shaped locket, hand-painted with dark green enamel, and embellished with white diamonds, suspended on an 18k yellow gold chain.
The panda is a significant and auspicious creature in Chinese culture, symbolising peace, harmony and friendship. This furry animal has also become an emblem for the conservation movement around the world — a call to action to preserve endangered species and the natural habitats of our wild animals.
Peter Carl Fabergé was renowned for crafting quirky little animals from hardstone as charms and ornaments. Art historians have described these creations – the Fabergé menagerie – as possessing ‘psychologically interpretive aspects’, or human-like qualities. The accentuation of specific characteristics of each subject also gave them distinctive personalities. Fabergé often combined these hardstones with precious metals and coloured gems, seamlessly integrating each with the other to produce miniature works of art. This precious addition to the Heritage collection is, therefore, a perfect example of Fabergé’s trademark style.
